   Artists : Marion Hawks

Maarion Hawks, with a BA in Art and Elementary Eduction and a MA in Curriculum, spent 42 years in the classroom, several times initiating new art programs in schools and helping to write art curriculum.  She believed in using the natural creativity in students to learn about every other subject.  Every day with the students was a learning activity for the teacher.  Occasionally she taught Art for the Elementary Teacher at college level or did adult classes in Basketmaking, a craft learned from Appalatian craftsmen.  Only after retiring in 1995 did she have time to really begin doing art for herself, taking classes with a great variety of people and trying out many new ways to create art.  To her, creating a piece of art is an adventure.  She is always looking for new and interesting materials to use in creating.  "I'm just like my students," she says.  " I still like to play!  There's just so much joy in creating.  I don't think I can possibly live long enough to run out of ideas or try out all the possibilities."
